Canine Prostate Awareness Month – Movember Clinic!

Did you know that your dog’s prostate can enlarge as they age? Did you know that prostate enlargement can be caused by various diseases?

The prostate is a small gland located near the neck of the bladder in male dogs. Like human men, as your dog ages the prostate gland can enlarge, causing symptoms such as painful and frequent weeing, straining when pooing and pain induced lameness. Some dogs show no obvious signs at all!

The most common prostate issue is called Canine Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia, which is a non cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland. This occurs in around 50% of entire dogs over the age of 7! Surgical treatment (castration) is the best way to restore the prostate back to its normal size.

Unfortunately some cases of prostate enlargement can be caused by a nasty tumour called an Adenocarcinoma. Although rare, this cancer can be aggressive and fast spreading, it also has an occurrence rate of 0.29 – 0.6% with the higher end being for castrated dogs. This is why it’s very important to get your dog’s prostate checked!
